Preliminary Design
Ideas Competition for the Technological Park Connected to the National Radioactive Waste Repository, to be built in Italy at a site yet to be identified by the issuing body. The National Repository is designed as a suitable location for the storage and treatment of radioactive waste.
The Technological Park is conceived not only as a headquarters for managing activities related to the National Repository and the decommissioning of nuclear plants but also as an advanced research center of international standing, specializing in environmental protection through the prudent management of human and industrial waste and exploring the possibility of generating clean energy from these materials and natural resources.
With these premises, it is possible to envision that the Technological Park—due to its connection with the National Repository, as well as its other research activities focused on environmental preservation—could become a unique opportunity for scientific and environmental sector development in the territory where it will be established.
The proposed Technological Park model is based on the following principle: The Technological Park will be configured as an internationally renowned research center, located in the rural Italian territory while respecting the environmental and morphological characteristics of the setting.
This guides the project toward a model of a "human-scale" Technological Park, combining the needs of a cutting-edge research center with the necessity of interacting with the surrounding territory and being recognized and integrated into the local community.
To achieve this goal, the research has focused on identifying natural and anthropic elements peculiar to the Italian territory, selecting some that have historically and locally characterized and endured in much of the national agricultural-rural landscape.
This project proposal for the Technological Park aims to define a possible settlement-functional model that can flexibly adapt to various potential locations across the country while serving as a scientific-cultural enterprise development reference nationwide.
The Technological Park will thus be a place of “doing,” engaging with the surrounding territory through principles of analogy and ideal continuity with the natural and anthropic features of the chosen site.
The settlement and architectural characteristics typical of the rural landscape, which have defined and shaped Italian agricultural scenery for centuries, are reinterpreted to meet contemporary distributive, functional, expressive, and construction needs.
The result is a new concept of a Technological Park that merges scientific research and innovation with the history and tradition of spontaneous rural architecture. This concept could be described as a "Techno-Farm"—derived from the Latin factor (linked to facĕre, meaning “to do” or “to create”), representing a space dedicated to productivity and ingenuity. Specifically, the project is distinguished by its identification and definition of settlement principles based on fundamental components of the agricultural-rural landscape: the typological and layout organization of cascina buildings, the irrigation network of rogge (small canals), land subdivision into plots, green structures represented by tree rows, and the spontaneous riparian vegetation.
