AL FAW CITY. IRAQ
-
RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS MASTERPLAN
The new city of al Faw is located northwards and in continuity with the historical urban center of Al Faw, along the Shatt Al ‘Arab river.
The masterplan foresees a new urban expansion according parallel zones along the river course . The area is bordered to the East by the river and to the West by the road connecting Basrah and Al Faw, which is planned to be upgraded.
The expansion of Al Faw is envisioned as a natural growth of the historic city, respecting the territory and enhancing the local specificities. The new expansion starts from the old city based on two assumptions:
-
the creation of a central alignment parallel to the river
-
the creation of a regular fabric oriented along crosswise axes perpendicular to the river course, as traces of the existing canals.
The longitudinal axis outlines the pillar of the whole urban expansion and is entirely dedicated to the public segment of the city, featuring an extensive linear municipal park punctuated along its length by public buildings, schools, and a Mosque. To the West and East of the park the urban fabric is characterized by residential, commercial and leisure areas.
The transverse axes, parallel to the canals, represent the grid of the urban fabric.
