The restoration project is based on the awareness that the Pirelli building is an architectural landmark, one of the finest artistic expressions of the past century. It is a perfect integration of art, architecture, engineering, technology and manufacturing expertise.

The purpose to preserve the architectural and technical value of the monument is based on the above mentioned premise. The restoration process entails the application of all the available restoration techniques in order to preserve and return efficiency and legibility.

Despite the materials and the construction solutions adopted in the building are new to the restoration discipline, familiar with traditional artefacts, but less experienced in the treatment of contemporary ones, the restoration has been carried out in accordance with the principles, in the modern sense, also relying to experimental and innovative operations developed with interdisciplinary collaborations and contributions.

Two different phases can be identified within the restoration project.

1) conservation, that functionally identifies the intervention areas and methods aimed to preserve the existing authentic elements.

2) functional renovation, that defines the operations aimed at replacing incomplete parts and returning the building to its original shape and function, as well as making more visible the representative role of the building as the Lombardy Region's Headquarter.
